The Burp Body Shot With Teddy Atlas

There is a phrase that is very good at describing how toughness works when it comes to combat sports. “You can be tough all you want to the head, but you can’t be tough to the body” Basically, as long as the shot doesn’t knock you out, you can take a lot of shots to the head and still keep going. That’s because for the most part, the head is able to take a lot of damage and it won’t hurt too much due to the relatively low amount of nerves and muscle on it. It also helps that the brain itself actually can’t feel pain.

This isn’t the case with the body. Sure you can take a few to the body and tough if out, you might even be able to take a lot. The thing is, sooner or later, those shots to the body will add up and no matter how tough you are, your body will literally start to shut down. This is especially the case if you land at a few key points on the body.

The most common of these points is the liver but there is another one that is talked about a lot less. This spot is the solar plexus and it can be a terrible place to take a shot. That’s why we have one of the best boxing coaches alive to show us how it’s done.

In this video, Teddy Atlas goes over how you can land shots to your opponent’s solar plexus, what he calls the burp.

Who Is Teddy Atlas

If you're a striker and haven’t ever heard of Teddy Atlas before, then you really need to fix that. Teddy Atlas is a boxing coach, analyst and commentator who has been around for decades. He’s worked with countless legends of the sport like Mike Tyson, Micheal Moorer and many

More. If you’re one of those people who hasn’t heard of him, do yourself a favor and do some film study on his fighters.

The Burp Body Shot

The burp is named that because it can literally cause your opponent to burp. The punch is targeted at the solar plexus. The solar plexus is the soft part of the body just under your chest where your ribs begin to separate.

Landing a punch here is a great way to push out all the oxygen from your opponent’s lungs. The burp itself is a very specific punch to this area, at least according to Teddy Atlas. What you’re going to do is get real nice and close to your opponent.

From there you are going to start to weave back and forth in front of your opponent. You’re basically going to be making big U motions in front of your opponent. Each time you weave you are going to throw a hook to the solar plexus of your opponent.

If you weave to your left you are going to throw your right hand and vice versa. Doping this a few times going back and forth should be enough to knock the air out of your opponent. That means if your opponent doesn’t drop because of the pain, they will because they literally can’t breath.

You can also throw the burp when you’re rolling under hooks. This works well because your opponent is literally exposed when they're throwing a hook. This means they have even less chance of protecting themselves from your body shot.
