Basic Boxing Warmup For EVERYONE With Souleyman Cissokho

Warming up before training or competition is, unfortunately, a very important part of any kind of athletic endeavour. You will never be able to perform as well as you are when you're warm when you’re cold. You won’t move as fast, you won’t hit as hard and you are at a higher risk of injury. This means that before we get to the meat and potatoes of our training, we unfortunately have to have our vegetables first.

The problem is that a lot of coaches treat warm ups as a place to get extra conditioning in. This is not the best idea as a warm up shouldn’t be a workout in itself. Warm ups should get you ready for training, literally making you warm, but you shouldn’t be tried. A warm up should make it so that you are not only warm but also so that the muscles that you are going to be using are activated. This way you are less likely to be injured in training.

When it comes to boxing, you would probably think that warming up your upper body is more important. While it is really important to warm up your upper body, you need to keep in mind that boxing is pretty much all about lower body motions. When you want to use footwork, you're using your lower body, when you are punching, if you’re punching correctly you will be using your lower body.

This is why it’s really important to make sure that the lower body is ready for training and or competition. In this video Souleymane Cissokho goes over a simple lower body warm up that he does after his upper body warm up. Souleymane Cissokho is a Senegal born fighter who competes out of France. As an amateur he won the bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the Light-Middleweight class. He now competes as an undefeated pro boxer and is the current French super Welterweight champion.

The warm up is very simple, first you are just going to go for a basic jog around your gym or mat area. This is a pretty standard part of most warm ups for basically all combat sports and martial arts. It’s just a great way to get your legs warm without being too intense. Eventually after jogging around for a little bit, you will start to add in five seconds of hard running on the spot.

Your coach or another person training will clap and then you will run as hard as you can on the spot for five seconds. After five seconds of running on the spot is done go back to your normal jogging around. Go for at least a three running on the spot sprints.

After doing a few sets of five second sprints you are going to switch from normal jogging to heels to the butt running. If you don’t want to repeatedly hit your own but you can put your hands there to cover it. After going around a few laps like that you will do one last switch to karaokes.

Make sure that you face both the inside and the outside of the gym while doing karaokes for at least a few laps each. When you finish off on each side, do a quick karaoke sprint, where you tighten up your feet and start to move them quicker. After that switch to jogging out for a short time to cooldown. After doing all that you should be moving as best as possible and ready for training or competition.
